Let's Rave About Emily Henry's People We Meet on Vacation

Here's a thought: We live in a world where giving second chances is not emotionally feasible. That's why we read about literary characters giving second chances.

I picked up this book last year, when I first started reading Emily Henry's work and it was speaking to me (iykyk). Unfortunately, this book was not what I was looking for at that time, and I had to put it down and move on to something else. Then, this week I felt like I should read something by a familiar author, and I also watched a YT video of someone who absolutely despised this book. At that point I knew I just had to read this book.

At this new stage in my life, I realized how much things have changed in the past year. I am at a different point in my career, in my writing journey, and in my journey as a reader. It's difficult to explain, but this book was exactly what I needed at the time I read it. It had me laughing out loud at the banter between the characters and the awkward situations that they found themselves in. I got to read about the roller coaster of emotions that the main characters went through, I was able to feel what they felt (the happiness, the angst, the emotional pain). This is such a well written book.

I love Love, but while I was reading this book, I found myself loving the relationship between Alex and Poppy; their friendship and their long-awaited romance. everything in between, not just the romantic parts. It has become my second-favorite book by Emily Henry (so far), and I cannot recommend it enough. If you have read this book, I'd love to hear what you thought of it!

As I was reading, I highlighted some parts that I absolutely loved (yes, I highlight my books. But y'all know this already, so don't be scandalized).

  • "Our lives went on, without each other in them. The new and strange became the familiar, the seemingly unchangeable, and now here I am, on a Friday night, staring at nothing."
  • When Alex hugged Poppy, she described their hug as a "gentle pressure on all sides that briefly compresses us into one living, breathing thing with twice as many hearts as we should have." I just loved this description of something as simple as a hug. It is just a hug, but we know that when it's the right person hugging us, even a hug can inject us with life.
  • "I loved to delight him, lived for it. I got such a rush from making that stoic face crack." Loved it loved it loved it  💗
  • "You're such a smart girl! And you've always known yourself. I'm so proud of you, honey." Did I tell you that Poppy's parents are just magnificent? Her mom was pure sunlight and she was my favorite side character.
  • "I want to ask if he wanted to talk to me all that time, if he ever typed messages that went unsent or thought about calling me for so long he actually started to dial." My heart hurt a little bit here, because I get it.
